Hello everyone,I recently made a meme joking about the Burgundy Succession, where I basically equated the Dutch to Spaniards. Here is the link: http://bit.ly/2APAN4r it was a good meme or not is not up to discussion, and frankly, I wouldn’t have minded had I been downvoted because of the quality of the meme. It just means I need to step-up my meme game. But frankly, I feel like I was downvoted because the meme was targeted by upset Dutch people. The fact that the meme had a good start in terms of upvotes but mostly, the fact that it is filled by upset Dutch comments proves that (in my opinion). First, the use of Dutch in a mainly English subreddit is not only coward but shows that they had no desire to communicate with me since I clearly don’t speak Dutch. They just wanted to communicate within their own circle of how unhappy they were.Arguably, some of their comments were funny once I googled translated them. I especially enjoyed the ones referencing William of Orange and it was nice banter but I think it’s lame that it came with massive downvotes for whatever I said just because I “attacked” them. It was basically a Dutch circle jerk.History is full of controversy, pride, national sentiment etc. and a subreddit dedicated to joking about it shouldn’t tolerate such a thing as national pride suffocating a meme, whether it is good or not. Instead, I feel like this subreddit is a great way to learn how to take yourself and your country’s history less seriously. What if my fellow Frenchmen and me ganged up on every meme that joked about France’s tendency to surrender quickly? What if we spoke French in the comments to express our anger? As an economist fascinated with trade and industry, I love the Netherlands and its history but frankly, I am disappointed in their reaction to my harmless meme. I don’t think anyone wants to be compared to Turks on whatever YouTube video dares say something bad about them or the Ottomans, but that’s how they acted in that case.I don’t want you to think that this is me complaining that my meme didn’t get a 1,000 upvote or what not. I just wanted to bring to light this accident which I found disappointing because I hope it doesn’t become a common thing.EDIT: Formatting and grammar. via /r/HistoryMemes http://bit.ly/2SZfnJb
